More Information
I think that steroids shouldn't be used by athletes in sports because it will no longer be about the talent. If steroids were used it would just be about who can get their hands on the most steroids not on how talented someone is. The actual talented people would just be second best behind the steroid users. It just gives people that unfair advantage, people who have worked hard to get where they are, are passed up because someone took a bunch of steroids. Plus if steroids were used, with all the side effects of them we wouldn't be having these "jacked" athletes for long. Heart conditions, anger problems, and the addictiveness of the drugs would make their lives shorter than wanted. I just think that there are better ways to make youself better at a sport then swallowing some pills or injecting yourself with steroids.

What has the sports industry done to prevent steroid usage on their teams? I know they do drug tests, but people are smart and know how to get around these. So what can they do to really have a no tolerence policy for steroids?
ReplyDeleteEveryone knows that they get their urine tested and there are ways to get around that and take steroids but now they have started to take blood also. I don't think that there are many ways to get around that.
ReplyDeleteWhat are some of the counter-arguments for steroid use? I know some people say it increases interest in the game--nobody watched baseball more than when Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire were knocking juiced balls out of the park with juiced bats and juiced arms. There's also the regular use of steroids in everyday situations for recovering from injury--how do we distinguish between necessary use of steroids and unnecessary use--even for athletes.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if the issue isn't really about banning steroid use, but what do we do with those athletes who use steroids? Should a high school kid be banned from college for steroid use? Should a college kid be banned from the pros? How will your argument impact this conversation?
That is a good point I would agree that juiced up guys can make the game more interesting but I think for the children who look up to those people it can be a little devastating to them to find out that their favorite baseball player has been using steroids. I have personally been administered steroids in the hospital because I was unable to eat and was losing a lot of weight but I think there is a fine line between being injured and having to take steroids to save your life and just taking them to gain muscle mass. It has been problem that kids with asthma can take steroids to open air ways but even then you need a prescription from a doctor in order to be exempt from punishment and the doses of steroids that you receive are not even close to what are being taking with professional athletes who abuse them. I don't necessarily think that they should be banned from the next step in athletics but I do think that they should have to be tested every month or even every week. I hope to stir up some debate about what people would do about steroids in the professional athletic world. Thank you for the additional topics to look up!
